Our Rates:
Knobby Sound has a few different pricing options to offer you.
The studio can be booked by an hourly or block rate, or by the
project, or through a spec deal.
1. Hourly or block: The studio can be booked for a flat fee
of $50 + hst per hour. This rate includes engineer, all studio
equipment, and of course...coffee! A block rate of $325
for 8 hours is available (with 1/2 hour set up time and meal
breaks not charged).
2. By the project: This is really our preferred method of
working, as it removes the concerns of money from the artistic
process. When Ian went into Metalworks studios in Toronto to
record "Out Of The Dark", he found that the hourly charges were
constantly on his mind and definitely did get in the way. Things
like accepting tracks that were not quite there, just over
concerns that watching the clock made worse as the sessions
continued. Booking the studio with the By-The-Project method
eliminates these anxieties! There are a number of factors that
come into the equation with this method of booking, including:
- The state of preparedness of the act
- The purpose of the project (CD release, demo,
pre-production, etc)
- An estimate of the studio and personnel time required to
complete the project

3. A speculative contract with Knobby: Under a spec deal with
Knobby, the creative crew at knobby works with you to complete
the project, as well as many other necessary materials for a
successful career launch (web site, CD liner, video production,
etc). Under a spec deal, we do not require direct payment for
studio and production time, but rather we sign a contract with
you wherein you grant us a percentage of your success. In other
words we invest in your career, and if your CD makes a ton of
money we make money, too. If, on the other hand, things don't go
quite as well, you aren't on the hook for tons of cash to pay
for your production.
Obviously we do not offer a spec deal to very many artists.
As a matter of fact, spec deals are designed for a particular
artist. Some acts need more work, in the form of developing new
material, arrangements, etc, whereas some artists are completely
ready to go but just lack funding.
In order to be considered for a spec deal, or even just to
discuss how it works, please contact us via email at ian @ knobbysound dot ca.
